First Bite: Outré

I have been curious about Outré for the longest time. Photos of the ice cream store's vandalized walls and the overflowing scoops of liquid nitrogen gelato made me drool like a St. Bernard. But its two branches are a bit too far from me and just thinking about the traffic makes me cringe. And so I made sure to include Outré as one of our stops when we went to Aguirre for a food crawl.

Hello, Outré
The place was empty when we got there around 3:30 pm on a drizzling Sunday afternoon.
I quickly ordered the Milo Dinosaur Gelato (PHP160) while K went with Dulce de Leche Gelato (PHP150).
It was fun watching them prepare our gelato. The smoky/fog effect never fails to entertain me.

K’s order was served first and it was mouthwatering. The generous serving of gelato was already dripping by the time I finished taking photos of it. Taste-wise, it wasn’t as sweet as I thought. It had a nice milky caramel flavor and a very creamy texture. It was rich but not cloying. But if you are not too fond of sweets, the pretzels will help solve the problem.
My Milo Dinosaur was served next and it was chocolate overload! The Milo-flavoredgelato was topped with Milo powder and a syringe with Milo syrup.
Despite the lack of colors, my order was quite photogenic. And it’s just not pretty, it was also delightful. It may be a chocoholic’s dream but it was surprisingly not as chocolatey as I anticipated. The taste, just like dulce de leche’s, was quite light. But if you have a monstrous sweet tooth, then you could drizzle some chocolate syrup on the gelato for additional taste.
Overall, I had a great time at Outré. I would love to be back if I get to visit Aguirre or Circuit Makati.

P.S. Check out their washroom! I find it so witty. It is named as Confession Room and there's a notebook inside where you could confess or share your darkest secrets.

New Year New Dishes: Osaka Ohsho Latest Offerings

I usually avoid SM Megamall because of the insane traffic that seems to surround the well-loved mall. However, I simply could not say no to The Relish Group’s invite especially if it means feasting on some Japanese treats. And so, I found myself braving the traffic one Wednesday night.
Hello, Osaka Ohsho!
Celebrating its 3rd year anniversary, the joint marketed to offer the best gyoza in the world had something prepared for those who have insatiable desire for Japanese cuisine.
This time around, Osaka Ohsho turned Spanish and European flavors a bit more Asian (or Japanese to be more specific) with its Truffle GyozaChori Gyoza and Japanese Paella
The truffle gyoza was love at first bite as the burst of flavors after a mouthful was pure bliss. The succulent meat paired with truffle was so addicting that my portion disappeared within a minute.
But this was not the end of the restaurant’s innovative take in Japan-izing cuisines. It also made the crowd favorite nachos into something that would make you have a taste of Tokyo (or Osaka). Its Nori Nachos or deep fried battered seaweed sheets topped with gyoza meat, furikake, Japanese mayonnaise and bonito flakes would make you utter “Ola, Hai!” (Note: This dish could be a tad too oily so try not to go crazy with this dish especially for those with sensitive tummies.)
And to all matcha lovers out there, you might want to try Osaka Ohsho’s Matcha Butter Tonkatsu. You read it right, MATCHATONKATSU. Your favorite breaded pork had a makeover and it was a bit Wicked inspired.

Just don’t expect a very strong matcha taste especially after munching on other flavorful dishes.
The Chicken Enokiyaki is your usual Chicken Teriyaki but made better with enoki! I loved this one as the tender chicken chunks were well complemented by the snap of enoki
Another addition to the growing Osaka Ohsho menu is Black Pepper Gyudon perfect for those who are fond of spices.

My favorites though were Salmon Cheese Aburi and Gyoza Tantanmien
The Salmon Cheese Aburi may not be photogenic but it was the dish that delighted my tastebuds the most. The salmon was moist and well complemented by the dry cheese bits on top.
I may be a bit biased with Gyoza Tantanmien though as I love noodles and anything with soup. Try to finish your bowl soon too as to enjoy the lovely contrast of the soft and crunchy noodles.
If you can’t decide on whether to go for Japanese, Spanish or Mexican for lunch or dinner, you might want to go to Osaka Ohsho to skip the decision making process.
Osaka Ohsho is located at 3rd Floor, Mega Fashion Hall, SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City.

First Bite: Bliss Bowls

My Instagram feed was filled with beautiful bowls of mouthwatering bowled treats for weeks and I could not help get curious by it. Upon quick research, I found out that these Instagram worthy treats are from Bliss Bowls, a new player in SM Megamall that offers healthy smoothies in a bowl.
Hello, Bliss Bowls!

I managed to convince some of my foodie friends to join me visit Bliss Bowls after a very filling feast from Osaka Ohsho. And since we hardly have space for extra treats, R and I decided to share a bowl of Cacao Kiss (PHP260). We opted to go without almond milk (additional PHP30) since our bowl already had coconut milk.
Topped with banana and strawberry slices, granola, sea salt and coconut flakes, the unsweetened cocoa smoothie tasted very healthy as I couldn’t seem to get a taste of any sweetener.
On the downside, I can’t seem to grasp the idea that I was enjoying a bowl of smoothie and not yogurt. Hence my tastebuds kept telling me that it was bland as I was looking for a stronger taste similar to yogurt’s.
I’m not sure if it was because I was quite full when I dropped by or if healthy treats are just not made to please my tastebuds but I was not too happy with the bowl we ordered. But I will definitely give this another try and go for Berry Bliss next time.

Love at First Bite: Ping Pong Diplomacy

I've been waiting for Ping Pong Diplomacy's opening ever since I saw its board up in SM Aura a couple of months back. Clueless of what this restaurant will offer, I was sure of one thing... that it'll be superb given that it's the brainchild of the Tasteless Group. From hits like Wrong Ramen, Le Petit SouffleHey HandsomeFowl BreadFreezer Burn, Bad Bird and so on, it's guaranteed that this new foodie destination will be just like its big brothers (or sisters?). And when I found out that they finally opened this week, I just have to be one of the first to indulge in its mouthwatering dishes.

Hello, Ping Pong Diplomacy
Before I drool again as I recall all the dishes I enjoyed during my visit, let's do a bit of recap on history.

Ping Pong Diplomacy is actually part of American and Chinese history and an important one at that as it was the first contact of both countries after two decades of neither diplomatic or economic relations. So why ping pong? The two countries' first exchange was through a game of table tennis during the 31st World Table Tennis Championships. If you've seen Forrest Gump, you'd get what I mean.
I'm sure you're still wondering why the Tasteless Group named its newest venture such. To answer, it's because Charlie Paw envisions this restaurant to be a place that offers a fresh take on Chinese food; just like how Americans pictured it to be in the 70s. (Note that there was no communication for two decades so the younger Americans then were quite clueless of the Chinese culture, more so for its cuisine.) This is also the reason why the innovative restaurant group tapped chefs Him Uy de Baron and Noel Mauricio, known for their unconventional and fresh dishes, to be the head chefs of this restaurant.

Now that we're on lunch break, let's focus on Ping Pong Diplomacy restaurant.
I was first greeted by a quirky lighted signage that changes lights to depict the movement of a ping pong ball. Such cute facade gave me an impression that I was about to have one fun lunch.
The wall filled with table tennis paddles caught my attention as I stepped inside Ping Pong Diplomacy. And as I tried to count the paddles, I kept thinking how perfect this wall would be as background for food shots!
I saw Charlie during my visit and he did the ordering for me. He chose Crunchy Eggplant (PHP140), Ping Pong Wings (PHP320), Simple Fried Eggs (PHP135), Dan Dan Chicken Skin Rice (PHP285) and Almond Soy Cooler (PHP85). I also ordered Fortune Balls (PHP150) as I'm crazy for mochi!

As I admire the interiors some more, my glass of Almond Soy Cooler was served. I tried my best not to take a sip in order to include it in the food shots and I barely made it.
This drink may come in a small glass but each sip is packed with flavor. I hate almond drinks but I was surprised that I enjoyed this one. The almond taste was pronounced but I'm happy that it didn't taste like medicine as some other almond drinks or desserts taste like. I also enjoyed munching on the jello.
A pretty fried egg topped with scallions, pork floss and sweet Oriental sauce was served next and it was love at first bite.
I love pork floss and eggs but I've never really had those two together at the same time. It sure tickled my tastebuds with its sweet taste.
The crunchy edges of the fried egg went well with the chewiness of the floss and the smooth texture of the yolk. This dish made me wish I discovered this pairing sooner.
The striking tower of battered eggplants was pretty good as well!
I loved how true the dish was to its name. The coating was indeed crunchy and was beautifully covered in sweet sauce with a bit of spicy kick. It was a nice contrast against the soft eggplant
A bowl of chicken wings soon followed and to be honest, I wasn't too excited with this one as I'm not a fan of chicken wings
But I was surprised that I liked it to the point of not minding the bones
I didn't expect that a 12 spice blend (think KFC with an Asian twist) chicken wings paired with crispy leek and pickled cucumbers would turn me into a fan of this popular finger food.

I was already getting full when the Dan Dan Chicken Skin Rice was served. Knowing that this is one of the talked about dishes at Fire in the Hole (Hole in the Wall's pop up booth last year), I just have to try it, even when I was told that this dish is hot. And by hot I mean spicy.
And it was indeed spicy but not to the point that I'd rush to the kitchen and drink gallons of water. It was manageable and I liked it! The scrumptious rice was a mix of sweet and spicy flavors topped with crunchy chicken skin and fried egg. The result, a gastronomic experience! The blend of flavors brought me to dandan heaven!

I read somewhere that you could request to make this dish a bit spicier if desired. I'm fine though with it as is.
And to cap my meal, I indulged in a colorful plate of mochi in black sesame, taro and ginger flavors topped with sesame crumble served on a bed of pistachio cream.
As usual, Chef Miko, the person behind this dish, wowed me.
I loved each mochi and the sesame crumble was a brilliant touch as it added texture to the chewy treat.
Overall, it was a fantastic dining experience. Food was great and prices were very pocket/wallet friendly. I'd definitely be back to try the other dishes and perhaps some more of the ones I've already tried.

Freezer Burn's Latest Flavor: Lemon Chicken Ice Cream

We fell in love with Freezer Burn since it launched one of the weirdest desserts, Ketchup ice cream and Fries. Such unique and never heard of flavor raised eyebrows and made some dessert lovers iffy to try it. But for some reason, it worked and made us foodies nostalgic about our fast food runs where we top our sundaes with fries. But Freezer Burn’s latest creation got me very intrigued as I never imagined lemon chicken as a sweet treat.

Hello again, Freezer Burn
Chef Miko’s teaser message about its latest creation, Lemon Chicken, got me so curious that I kept thinking about it during my El Nido escapade. Yes, I was thinking about lemon chicken while snorkelling!
And after days of anticipation, I finally got to drop by Freezer Burn and sampled probably the weirdest dessert to date.

A composed dessert made of zesty lemonice cream paired with baked to perfection crispy chicken skin marinated in lemon juice was a marriage of flavors no one would have anticipated in terms of dessert but it worked and delighted our tastebuds.
The smooth and creamy tangy ice cream was made even more interesting by the salty (with a tinge of zest) and crunchy chicken skin, meringue bits and golden chocolate coin. I also could not resist munching on the fortune cookie on top.
If I were to describe this dessert using one word, it would be… superb!

You guys outdid yourselves once again, Chef Miko and Chef Kristine!

Thank you for the generous invite!

First Bite: Privatus Dining by Radical Culinary Inc.

The term fine dining never fails to scare my wallet as it always sounds so expensive. But I was proven wrong by a few establishments, one of which is Privatus Dining by Radical Culinary Inc. I have to admit, I was a bit hesitant to go to this restaurant as the location seems to be a bit off from the usual roads I take. But reading the beautiful write up of Esquire about this foodie destination made me think otherwise and soon, I found myself in front of the restaurant (which happens to be very easy to spot as long as you have your Waze on).

Hello, Privatus Dining.
Located at the second floor of EMPro compound, we were greeted by sophisticated modern industrial interiors enveloped by warm yellow lights.
We were quickly assisted to our table and were given some welcome drinks called Espuma & Berries
I loved the fizz I get from each sip and I enjoyed munching on the strawberry and blueberry bits.
After a quick chitchat with some of our foodie friends, the crowd favorite Squash Blossoms (PHP180) was served and soon followed by Sisig Croquetas
I absolutely loved Squash Blossoms which had seafood mousse and uni mayo. Its crunchy batter gave a nice contrast against the soft squash. The seafood mousse and uni mayo gave the appetizer more character and made everyone yearn for more.
SisigCroquetas with chili mayo was pretty good too. With the sisig stuffing in béchamel sauce, prepare your tastebuds for a splash of flavors.
Next on the menu was Shrimp& Singkamas (PHP350) as our salad.
This lovely plate of bundled shrimps wrapped in cabbage sitting on a pool of aligue sauce with turnip on the side was nothing short of brilliant. It was pure bliss munching on this dish. I loved the crunch of the cabbage and the snap of fresh shrimps. Though T commented that the aligue sauce could be a bit stronger, I like it as is as I prefer the dish before my mains to have lighter flavor.
Inasal Stew (PHP450), one of the two mains served that night, made such an impression when it masked the whole place with its fragrant pandan leaves.
The sous vide chicken was cooked beautifully. The succulent white meat and flavorful brown chicken skin were complemented by mushrooms, onions and tomato chunks. Though it doesn’t exactly give the usual grilled chicken inasal taste (and instead something a bit more Chinese), it was still stellar in my book. Don’t skip the stew as its slight tangy taste is also a treat to the tastebuds!
But the spotlight was on Local Wagyu (PHP950) which was paired with glazed onions and pickled cauliflower.
The local wagyu from Bukidnon had a nice beefy taste which other wagyu do not have. However, since our local meat are used to walking around, these meat chunks are tougher than the ones sourced from places like Japan.

Though it was great taste-wise, I think it would have been better with garlic.
Before indulging in some sweet treats, we were given some tequila shots cleanse the palate. And I loved how the sugared lemon made the shot a lot sweeter.
For desserts, we were given Strawberry Shortcake and Fried Ice Cream (PHP200).
The Strawberry Shortcake which was a combination of spongecake, strawberry mousse and chocolate with strawberry sorbet on the side was a tangy treat. I was warned by one of the chefs about it as they only use locally sourced ingredients to make their dishes hence the strawberry sorbet may be a bit sour. And true enough, this dish served more as another palate cleanser than dessert, except the chocolate dome.
Then again, foodies addicted to sour candies would love this!
The Fried Ice Cream (which I misheard as fried rice) was superb! I loved the rich taste of sweet mango ice cream and combining it with crisp fried sweet potato strips.
The different textures and flavors were just too heavenly and made me smile from ear to ear.
We capped the night with some bubbly and cheered for a fruitful 2017. How’s that for a memorable dinner?
Thank you Mark Marquez, Chef AJ Reyes and Mikaira for the fantastic dinner!

First Sip: Recession Coffee

The pay what you want scheme doesn’t seem to be a very sound business model and it takes a lot of guts to implement one here in Manila. And to have multiple branches with such payment scheme takes more guts than when Maximus Decimus Meridius fought for his life when he was pitted against a tiger. Anyway, you get it; pay what you want empowers the customers to pay whatever they feel like for what they are getting or ordering. And with great power comes… abuse. Some would pay way below than what is expected. The upside though is that since it’s unconventional, it gets attention.

Hello, Recession Coffee
I first heard of this café when it opened its first branch in Eastwood. A few foodies posted their experiences with some being pleasant and some ending on a sour note. I took note of the common thing I saw in each post… that the coffee was just so-so. The stingy bone in me wanted me to muster the courage of just paying PHP1 for my coffee; but I simply couldn’t if I were to buy a cup on my own. And so, when I dropped by its newest branch in S Maison, I ended up paying PHP20 as my next smallest change was PHP500 and I don’t want to ask for PHP499 as my change. (Well, it was a crisp bill.)
While waiting for my cup, I spotted a jar filled with 90s classic candies labeled “Free Candies — As if our pay what you want model isn’t generous enough, we’re throwing in these free treats too.”
Oh man… when will the awesomeness of Recession Coffee stop?!
After a short while, I got my small cup of Café Latte which seemed to be fairly priced at PHP80-90 given its size.
Just when I was about to sit down, I noticed that each tabletop signage are different but all are very funny and quite relatable especially when the wallets and pockets are extra light.
I took a sip of my drink while reading a few more and… it didn’t taste good. It was on the bland side and sadly, I have to agree with the other reviews I’ve read so far. I don’t know if they scrimp on coffeebeans because I paid an amount just good for a cup of Nescafe but if that’s the case, then it should have been “you get what you pay for” model instead.

Nonetheless, I liked the wittiness of the place and I respect Charlie Paw’s courage in setting up a business with such model.

First Bite: Wasabi Warriors

Wasabi Warriors caught my interest when it first opened on the ground floor of the posh The Gramercy Residences. This Japanese sushi place exuded a cool vibe as I’ve seen the local “it” people raving about Wasabi Warriors’ rolls. And when it opened a branch in Serendra, I went to look at its menu and was surprised that its rolls are quite affordable. For a sushi place that started in a classy building, I had the impression that it would be pricey. I’m not complaining though as more affordable prices mean more food!

Hello, Wasabi Warriors!
This small well-lit Japanese joint was the first stop of our sponsored Good Food Tour and I literally ran towards this place right after work. Luckily, they were still serving miso soup when I got there.
We were treated to a platter of assorted makis including Fresh Salmon and Avocado (PHP150/roll), Inside Out Rolls (PHP150), and Panko Prawn (PHP150) as well as Seared Salmon Nigiri (PHP400, 6 pcs. | PHP250, 3 pcs. | PHP100, 1 pc.) and a handful of bento meals. I got to try Set D (PHP500) which includes beef teriyaki, two seared salmon nigiri, seaweed salad and miso soup. You could also replace beef teriyaki with chicken for the same price or ebi fry for an additional PHP50.
I sampled one of the Panko Prawn rolls topped with avocado slices and it was pretty good. I liked the contrast of textures and flavors.
I wanted to get the one with salmon on top as I love salmon. Sadly, someone not from our table asked for a piece of roll and took that one! *heartbroken*
At least I got to enjoy the seared salmon nigiri which was awesome! It was beautifully torched and it was packed with flavor! I loved the slight sweet taste of it. On the downside, it was quite steep at PHP100 per piece. You need to splurge PHP400 to get a better deal as you could get seared salmon elsewhere at PHP80-85.
Wasabi Warrior’s bento meals are also a bit on the expensive side but it offers quality dishes.
I loved the sweet and tender beef teriyaki and had a hard time controlling myself from getting more than I should as I was sharing it with other foodies. I also liked that one order comes with two scrumptious salmon nigiri. I just hope that they would add a few rolls too for more variety and to make the bento more value for money.
Overall, it was a good first stop for our Good Food Tour. We just struggled with moving around as the dining area was really small. If you hate squirming around just to get from one place to another, then it might be best for you to just order take out. Just visit Food Panda PH and click your way through Warrior Wasabi’s menu.

First Sip: Deété Organic Café

What happens when two corporate slaves get to visit the concrete jungle of Makati filled with new food finds? They go crazy. And that was what exactly happened to R and I when we visited Century City Mall after a filling Indian feast. We filled every inch of our tummy with food and capped the night at one of the newest coffee shops in the mall.

Hello, Deété Organic Café.

We wanted to enjoy a hot beverage to help us digest all the food we ate and thought that it would be a great idea to stop by this place before heading home. It was already almost 11pm when we got here and we were welcomed by jolly servers.
Deété has a lot of drinks to offer and it took us quite a while before we finally settled with Green TeaLatte (PHP140, 12 oz) and Black Tea Latte (PHP130, 12 oz). At first, we were unsure if we should get the warm or cold version of these drinks so we asked the barista for recommendation. And he gave the funniest reply. He said that he loves cold drinks and it solidified his fats. It sure made us order warm drinks.

There were still a handful of people inside the cafe past 11 pm and most of them were either busy reading or working on something with their laptops. We on the other hand were busy taking photos of the place.

Soon, our drinks were served and it looked more than 12 oz with its huge cups.
R liked her drink as it had a nice green tea taste.
My drink on the other hand was a tad too sweet to cap the night. There was a lovely taste of black tea but the barista went overboard with the sweetener. It was like having dessert all over again.

While sipping our drinks, we asked for some plates for us to try the matcha croissants I got that afternoon. They quickly gave us two small plates without any hesitation. I was impressed with how this café provide quality service.

I could barely finish my drink and asked the staff to transfer my leftover latte to a to go cup. I took tiny sips of my drink on the way home but I simply just could not finish it as it was too sweet for my liking.

I’d still go back though as I’m curious with its bing su

I have been hearing that there’s a café in McKinley that offers one of the best milk teas in the metro. Since R and I were already in the area, we decided to head to the popular café to try some of its talked about drinks.

Hello, Black Canyon!

Black Canyon is located along the strip of restaurants in Tuscany so it is easy to spot this cafe.
It had simple no frills interiors and the counter was the first thing you’ll see once you step inside. You may opt to order in front or have one of the wait staff approach you.

I went with the bestseller Cha Thai Yen (PHP120) while R ordered Matcha Green Tea Glacier Frappe (PHP180). We also ordered a bowl of Taro Balls in Coconut Cream (PHP78) as dessert. (We just had lunch at Nihonkai Tsukiji when we dropped by this shop.)

While waiting, R and I took advantage of the free wifi and charged our phones while we catch some Pokemon.
Our bowl of taro balls was served in less than 10 minutes and it made me realize why it was cheap. The bowl used was small and if you have a  big appetite, you could eat this in two mouthfuls. Taste-wise, it wasn’t that impressive.
It had a faint taste of taro and the coconut cream didn’t help much. I was also slightly disappointed as I was picturing something like bilo-bilo or rice balls. It was my bad though to expect such from taro balls which was more mushy than sticky.
R’s Matcha Green Tea Frappe was quite good. It had good green tea flavor and it wasn’t overly sweet. However, I still prefer the siren’s version over this one.
I had high hopes for Black Canyon’s bestseller but I was disappointed by it as well. The milk tea taste wasn’t that strong. Though I liked that it wasn’t sweet, it was close to being described as watered down.
However, despite a not so impressive first impression, I’ll most likely visit again to try Black Canyon’s savory dishes. I think this place deserves a second chance. And no, it’s not for Pokemon Go.

Love at First Bite: Bamba Bistro

Our third Aguirre stop is a well-loved restaurant that is known to serve really good pasta and other comfort dishes. And I have to say this now (or forever hold my peace), this was my favorite stop in Aguirre.
Hello, Bamba Bistro!
The small restaurant has a very warm ambiance that reminded me of La Creperie. There are only a few tables inside and we had to wait for a group to bill out before being accommodated.

It took a bit of time though (and it was also humid outside) so I asked if we could take the two small tables by the window. The server tried to put the small tables together but given the tightness of the space, she struggled. We then just decided to wait for the table inside the main area but placed our orders beforehand so that we do not have to wait longer. We ordered DuckRavioli (PHP495) and Huevos Flamencos (PHP210).
We were ushered to our table right after it was cleared and soon, our appetizer was served.
The Huevos Flamencos came in a small clay pot placed on a wooden plate. The chorizo, ham, ground beef, stewed tomatoes combination topped with egg was delicious.
It went well with the buttered bread and the saltiness of the chorizo and ham were balanced by the tanginess of the tomatoes.
It was love at first bite for the duck ravioli.
Each ravioli was packed with duck meat and delicately wrapped in al dente pasta. It was well complemented by the saltiness of the ricotta cheese and the creaminess of the sauce while the porcini mushroom added bite to the dish. I could barely smell the truffle oil but it did wonders to the dish as it was superb! K loved the sauce so much that he slurped it like soup!

What made our stay in Bamba Bistro even more memorable is the place's noteworthy customer service. The guy who served our food is so friendly and took the initiative to help me with my food shots. He lifted the plates for me so that I could take photos of the dishes with nice backgrounds. I handed him a tip so that he didn’t have to share it with the others but I saw him put it in the tip box. Bravo! I hope that my food shots make you proud.
Will I go back? Definitely! I would visit weekly if only it’s closer to my area.

First Bite: Wok2Go

In order to survive in Manila, one must learn to move and act fast. And with the intense daily struggle with city traffic, we are challenged to do several tasks at the same time. Thankfully, a new food concept understands our need to be always on the go and three brilliant minds thought of Wok2Go.

Hello, Wok2Go.
This refreshing concept by Kim Garcia, Marc Soong and Angie Mead King located at Venice Grand Canal Mall is designed to allow its diners to enjoy its savory dishes while being on the move.
Wok2Go allows its diners to be creative with their orders as each meal is highly customizable. Foodies can choose from a wide range of sauces and ingredients that one would not think would work together… but surprisingly do.
With local and international sauces, one can choose among Sinigang, Adobo, Binagoongan, Hong Kong Pepper, Korean Gochujang, Thailand Green Curry, IndonesianRujak and Japanese TeriyakiSauce.
For fiber, the options are red or white rice, rice noodles or mixed vegetables. For meat, you have beef, pork, chicken, shrimp and squid.  Other add-ons are various greens such as broccoli, cauliflower, bell pepper and chili. There are also fried tofu, fried shallots, mushrooms, crushed peanuts and sesame seeds to give different flavors and textures.
Since I love sour soup, I went with Sinigangwith rice noodles topped with squid bits, broccoli and mushrooms.
And I was pleasantly delighted that all ingredients work harmoniously with each other! (They weren’t kidding when they said, “the weirder, the better.”)
The tangy soup base was evident per bite and I wasn’t expecting that I’d enjoy it with noodles. The squid, broccoli and mushrooms on the other hand added texture to the dish.
R tried Pork Binagoongan with red rice and the works in terms of meat and liked it too!
Though one order could be pricier compared to other options (as mine reached PHP210 with minimal toppings) as everything is an add-on, it is money well spent as you will indulge in a healthier than fast food meal and you also get to pick what you want.
Wok2Go opened its doors to the public last January 28 and there are already plans for expansions with two to three more in the pipeline.

Wok2Go is located at 2nd Floor, Venice Grand Canal Mall, McKinley Hill, Taguig City.

We all know that Baguio is the land of strawberries and anything strawberry. There’s strawberry taho, strawberry sorbetes and even strawberry sinigang. But let’s not go crazy and talk about savory strawberry-flavored dishes. Let’s stick with desserts, particularly shortcakes. And by shortcakes, I mean, Visco’s.

Hello, Visco’s Restaurant and Cake Shop!
I’ve been reading a lot of great reviews about this cake shop along Upper Session Road for years. However, R and I usually avoid city center whenever we visit Baguio as we’re both not so fond of traffic, worrying about parking and crowd. The foodie in me could not take it any longer though and wanted to take a bite of the famous shortcake to know if it really is one of the best in the country. With frustrated tastebuds, I asked R and his parents if we could pass by the bakeshop one evening after dinner for me to buy a slice or two. And they said yes! *twirl*
I was greeted by a long take out queue when I stepped inside the busy restaurant. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to buy a cake as the display showcase was almost empty with only two strawberry shortcakes left.
But the friendly cashier assured me that they still have a lot more and true enough, I spotted a bunch of tall fridges when I reached the counter.
I originally planned to get a slice of Strawberry Shortcake (PHP95/slice) but after seeing how everyone goes crazy over its cakes, I decided to make my trip worthwhile and ordered a 6” cake for PHP430.

I quickly took a slice as soon as I got back to the rest house and it was heavenly!
The chiffon was so soft and fluffy and each layer was stuffed with cream and strawberry slices. But I loved the top part best as it had generous serving of huge strawberry slices and jello.

This treat is perfect with tea or coffee while enjoying the foggy view Baguio offers.

I’ll definitely brave the traffic again for more of this delectable cake!

When in Baguio: Arca's Yard

Baguio is one of my go-to places when I need to relax, unwind and get fat with strawberries. Thanks to TPLEX, our trip to the land of ube halaya and cold breeze has been cut in half. Since then, I’ve visited Baguio a lot more but I always miss the opportunity to visit Arca’s Yard due to scheduled hibernation. But I finally managed to drop by this picturesque restaurant before bidding farewell to 2016.

Hello, Arca’s Yard!
This place has been highly recommended by a handful of food apps and reliable foodies. My smile was that of Cheshire Cat (from Alice in Wonderland) when I found out that we’ll have lunch there on New Year’s Eve. Worried that we might not have seats, I sent the place an SMS to reserve us a table for six hungry individuals.
I was surprised that the place was not packed as expected but the beautiful corner with coffee table and pillows was already occupied by another group.
And since we were with R’s parents, we need to be on actual chairs so that it won’t be difficult for them to get up. (I have to admit, I was slightly heartbroken there but the mature me figured that I could make do with just interior shots and simple flat lays.)
For lunch, we ordered Pumpkin Soup (PHP60), Oyster and Mushroom Soup (PHP60), Crispy Lemon-Orange Chicken (PHP240), Longganisa with Egg (PHP165), Hungarian Sausage with Homemade Bacon and Egg (PHP240), Stir-fried Vegetables with Squid and Mushroom (PHP220), Vanilla Milkshake (PHP120) and Arca’s Cloud Tea (PHP60).
First served was R’s Vanilla Milkshake and it tasted pretty good though it would have been nicer if it was a bit thicker.
Our soups were served next just in time to keep us warm and both tasted great as well.
I loved that the pumpkin soup was thick and slightly sweet. Adding a bit of pepper made it even better!
Though I liked my pumpkin soup more than R’s clear oyster and mushroom soup, I liked that it was light in terms of flavor prepping the tastebuds for the main course.
The longganisa was quite garlicky guaranteeing a powerful kick of flavor per bite.
This may be a hit for those who love what Count Dracula hates but foodies who like to eat more of the viand than the meat might find the three Pinoy sausages a bit too stingy.
The Hungarian sausage, on the other hand, was the total opposite of longganisa in terms of size. Succulent and mildly spiced, it was well complemented by the crunchy homemade bacon (which tasted like thinly sliced pork chop) and runny sunny side up egg. It was bang for the buck as I was so full after eating half of my plate.
A strange cup with one chopstick was served to us and I totally forgot that I ordered milk tea and that was it.
Though pretty to look at, it didn’t really pleased my tastebuds. I had a taste of milk, tea and honey but the flavors didn’t exactly blend together. Also, the wild honey used gave a bit of weird taste to the drink which I didn’t like.
The Crispy Lemon-Orange Chicken and Stir-fried Vegetables with Squid and Mushroom were served last and both were quite delicious as well.
The crunchy chicken had this addicting delectable tangy citrusy taste pushing one to eat more rice than planned. Serving size of the chicken was pretty generous too as four of us were able to share it.
The veggies were undeniably fresh as it gave off a sweet taste. The squid and mushroom slices added texture to the dish and made it a bit more interesting to munch on.
Overall, it was a good meal far away from the bustling city noise. Though the dishes were nothing special, its reasonable prices and the ambiance were worth the drive.

Restaurant Love: Chaya

A trip to Chaya is always one of the things that excite me whenever R and I visit Baguio. Discovering this hidden gem along Legarda Road has been one of our fondest Baguio memories. Just thinking about its superb sashimi and sukiyaki make me drool for hours. And a few months back, we decided to escape the scorching Manila heat and headed to Baguio one rainy Friday late afternoon. As we reached Baguio with grumbling tummies, we couldn’t think of anything else but Chaya.
Hello again, Chaya!
Unlike our first visit, the place was packed with locals and tourists alike. As we were expecting to hear the dreaded phrase, “we’re full and could not accommodate you”, we were ushered to the back part of the restaurant which happens to be a dining area as well.
We quickly ordered Sukiyaki (PHP390), Chirashi Sushi (PHP380), Salmon Seafood Salad (PHP260, small | PHP380, full) and a glass of Green Tea Shake (PHP120).

The beautiful Salmon Seafood Salad was served first and we couldn’t help feel disappointed upon giving it a closer look.
This order should have had other seafood bits but it was just salmon chunks, a few shrimps and less than 5 slices of squid. I guess we were hoping too much for PHP260. Nonetheless, it was pretty good and I enjoyed munching on the alfalfa sprouts.
Our bowl of Chirashi Sushi was served next and I liked that there were enough sashimi to be shared by two. The sushi rice had a bit of sweet taste which was complemented by the fresh seafood cuts such as tuna, squid and salmon. I loved the salmon and squid cuts the best. R on the other hand didn’t fancy this as much as I did as he only liked the salmon cuts which we already had from the salmon seafood salad.
A piping hot bowl of sukiyaki was served last and just like last time, it was scrumptious!
I loved the sweet and salty broth which went very well with the thin slices of meat, mushroom and other greens.
We also poured an egg in the bowl to make the soup thicker.
Last served was our favorite Green Tea Shake which we slurped down to half in less than 2 minutes. Its rich flavor sure make it one of the best green tea shakes I’ve had so far. It would have been a lot better though if they served it before the dishes. It took several follow ups before we got this.

And of course, a trip to Chaya won’t be complete without its complementary matcha ice cream.
It may be just a teaspoonful of matcha ice cream but its rich flavor was enough to cap our meal on a good note.

It was another lovely dining experience in Chaya. The only problem we encountered was calling the servers as there are times when there were no waiters to wave at for water and bill.

Chaya is located at 72 Legarda Road, 2600 Baguio City. You may contact them at (074) 424 4726, 0915 905 4820 or visit www.chayabaguio.com for details or reservation.

First BIte: Providore Backyard

It was just a few months ago when Providore delighted my tummy with its superb Bone Marrow Burger. I had a quick chat with A, one of the owners of Raintree Restaurants and I got an insider info that they plan to open an al fresco dining area to serve early morning meals and after work drinks. And last February 8, Providore Backyard, finally opened.

Hello, ProvidoreBackyard!
The chic white shed, faux grass and bar were the first things we saw as soon as we stepped out of the air-conditioned section of Providore. Not only does the set up recreate a “backyard look”, it also exudes a very homeyand relaxed ambiance perfect for that well deserved nightcap.
Since we wanted to stick with some light snacks, R and I opted to go with Cali Dog (PHP295) and Steel Plate Nachos (PHP395). For drinks, we went with Red Sangria(PHP275) and Margarita Berry(PHP225).

First served were our drinks and both were pretty good.
The red sangria had a good amount of fruit chunks to make the drink sweet and refreshing.
The MargaritaBerry was delightful too. Though it may not have the same punch as other margaritasyou’d get elsewhere,
I liked that I could have a glass or two of this delectable drink without having to worry about wobbling home.
The huge plate of nachos was served next and it was packed with cheese, guacamole, onions, pickles and tomato bits guaranteeing each mouthful to tickle your taste buds.
What I loved most about this dish though was that the nacho chips remained crispy despite swimming in toppings for 20 minutes or so. (We had to wait for Cali-Dog before indulging in this great for sharing plate of goodies. Coz, flatlay.)

Though the Cali-Dogdidn’t have what we’d call mouthwatering plating, it made up for its lack of Instagram worthiness with taste.
I love the snap I get from each bite of the hotdogand the generous serving of sauerkraut, mustard and bacon bits. The fries on the side were perfectly seasoned too and complemented the hotdog.
Though we were only able to try the casual snacks and bar chows, Providore Backyard also offers breakfast meals. And great news to early risers! This picturesque al fresco dining area is open as early as 8 am. Fret not night owls as you could still get your late night grub till 2am.

Providore Backyard is located at Ground Floor, SM Aura Premier, McKinley Parkway, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.

I'm in Lava again with Lava Cheese Tarts

It has been a while since I last dropped by Lava for my cheese tart fix. I try to avoid it as I’ve had a lot during Christmas break. But when my tummy craves, my whole body follows.  And so, I found myself in front of Lava one early afternoon.
Hello again, Lava Cheese Tarts!

This time around, I noticed that Lava has a new variant and it’s a sweet one at that. Literally.
Presenting, Gorgonzola and Honey Cheese Tart.

This is perfect for those looking for a sharper cheese taste beautifully balanced by the sweetness of honey. (If you’re a fan of honey and cheese combo, then you’d love this!)
Though pricier at PHP85 per piece compared to the classic or original at PHP80, I do not mind the small price difference as the stronger taste is worth it!
I still have yet to try its coffeebut I prefer pairing my cheese tart with milk.
By the way, Lava is now available in SM Megamall (Ground floor, Building A, near National Bookstore) and they are also launching new flavors first week of March! I can’t wait!

Hunt for Tiramisu: UCC Café Terrace

It all started with a few reviews raving about this tiramisu from a  classy pizza restaurant. It sure made the rest of us curious and went to the said restaurant a few days after. And sadly, some of us went home disappointed as the tiramisu didn’t have the flavor or texture they were looking for. So what makes a tiramisu spectacular? Well, for one, it has to be chilled, soft and moist. The espresso and liquor should also not overpower the chocolate taste of the dessert. With these in mind, the looloo gang started a hunt for the best tiramisu. Our first stop: UCC.

Hello, UCC Café Terrace!
UCC was deemed as one of the top places to buy tiramisu. Our expectations were high as UCC in general is a good restaurant and serves delectable dishes.

We ordered two orders of Tiramisu (PHP220 each) for sharing. J and R also ordered coffee to kickstart the day.
While waiting for our desserts, R’s Kori Kohi was served first and it looked interesting. The coffee was frozen and turned into iced coffee cubes. In order to enjoy the drink, you have to pour some warm milk. And R loved the drink! I will definitely try to make some at home.

The tiramisu was served next and it was pretty small for its price.
It was pretty good though as it was chilled, moist and not too sweet. UCC didn’t go crazy with the cocoa powder as well hence being a cough-free dessert. I liked that the espresso and liquor tastes were not that strong yet noticeable.
Overall, it was a pretty good dessert but it still cannot dethrone my favorite creme brûlée.
UCC Café Terrace is located at Forbes Town Center, 26th Street, Burgos Circle, Taguig City.

First Bite: Samba

Shangri-La chain of hotels has been known to offer superior services. These past years though, the spotlight has been on its dining establishments. From the well loved Heat, Senju and Summer Palace of Edsa Shangri-La to Inagiku of Shangri-La Makati, tastemakers have grown to be fascinated with the new additions Canton Road and Raging Bull of Shangri-La at the Fort.  And late last year, a new restaurant was added to the list and it is designed, just like the others, to give us a gastronomic experience worth remembering.

Hello, Samba.
This Peruvianrestaurant on the 8th floor of Shangri-La at the Fort, may seem to be a bit misplaced at first given that Canton Road and Raging Bull are both on the 3rd floor.  However, one would understand why this restaurant is placed there upon stepping in its al fresco dining area.

Situated to be right beside the pool, one could lounge by the poolside while drinking one of Samba’s signature drinks and enjoy the cool night breeze. But we dropped by not just to get intoxicated by the restaurant’s delightful concoctions. We went there to indulge in some scrumptious dishes.

Service was quite fast considering that the place was entertaining several big groups (one of which was former Ms. Universe Gloria Diaz’s party). First served were the appetizers.
Chicharrón de Cangrejo (PHP650) was the first dish to grace our table. The crispy soft shelled crab was served with Peruvian limo chili, cilantro, pineapple, passion fruit sweet dip, and zarza criolla. Though it’s your usual deep fried crunchy crab, the sauce made it stand out. The slight tangy, sweet, and spiced drip turned the typical crab into a delectable appetizer that tickles the taste buds.
The SalmonT-RA-D-TO (PHP450) was great too! The thin salmonslices were drizzled with lemon juice and extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) then topped with onion brunoise, celery, mushroom and micro greens. I loved the combination of flavors and textures. The light taste also makes it an excellent appetizer.
A more familiar dish, CevicheLimeño (PHP525), was served next and it was perfect to be paired with a few cocktails. The beautiful mix of shrimp, octopus, scallops, calamari, lapu lapu, red onion, coriander sprouts and tobiko swimming in leche de tigre (citrus-based made of freshly squeezed lime juice, limo pepper and cilantro) was a splash of flavors per mouthful. The contrast in textures also made it more interesting.
But Conchas al Carbon, (PHP475) stole the spotlight for this dish was on fire, literally.
The plate of chargrilled scallopsmarinated in Aji Amarillo ceviche topped with cilantro leaves and chopped red onions had some salt drizzled with alcohol in the middle that the server set on fire. And it was done not just for show. It was actually meant to heat the scallops.
Although good, I feel that the Aji Amarillo masked the delightful and delicate taste of scallops.
And this is why I prefer Chalaquitas(PHP440), yet another scallop dish but instead of Aji Amarillo, it was topped with onions, tomato brunoise, lime juice, coriander and corn which helped highlight the scallops.
Anticucho de Pulpo(PHP500) was another favorite that night as the chargrilled octopusseasoned with panca pepper wowed and tickled the good ol’ taste buds.
The slight spice from rocoto added a new dimension and the roasted potatoes gave it a contrast in texture. [Note: This dish is not ideal for the elderly as it might be a bit hard for them to chew this.  If ever they insist, give them the tentacles part as it’s softer.]

The Brazilian Moqueca de Camarao (PHP750) was scrumptious too and it acted as our soup.
I went to seafoodheaven upon watching the warm Malagueta chili chowderbeing poured on the picturesque bowl of lapu lapu fillet and prawnssitting on EVOO, palm oil and cilantro.  But having my first mouthful made me stay in that heaven a bit longer.

The freshness of the lapu lapu fillet and prawnadded a bit of sweet taste, which harmoniously blended with the thick chowder. I could easily finish one order on my own.

But one of my favorite I’m-going-to-dream-of-you-for-weeks dish was the mouthwatering Arrozcon Mariscos (PHP700). Though this dish doesn’t seem to be as photogenic as the other dishes, especially compared to Conchas al Carbon, it was a winner in terms of taste.
The Peruvian seafood rice mixed with calamari, octopus, shrimps, scallops, white wine, paprika, creole seasoning, parmesan cheese and coral butter would remind one of risottoor paella. I fell hard for the cheesy taste of this dish and the contrast between the soft rice and fresh seafood.
Yet another familiar taste was Pork Anticuchos con Salsa de Adobo (PHP525). The 18-hour slow cooked pork belly seasoned in panca pepper, fresh oregano and red onions was served inside a crispy sourdough bread bowl. I was expecting the pork belly to be very soft given that it was simmered for 18 hours. However, I found it a bit tough. The rich sauce also made me not like this as much as the other dishes.
But my frown was instantly turned upside down by Chuletón de Res (PHP4,500). The 800g sous-vide chargrilled US certified black angus prime rib in pepper sauce with roasted sweet potato, pumpkin, beetroot, and asparagus on the side was perfection! I enjoyed munching on the succulent meat and contrasting it with the crunch of asparagus and sweetness of sweet potato and pumpkin chunks.

We paired these wonderful dishes with equally good cocktails.
I tried Pisco Perucho(PHP400) first which was highly recommended to me by one of the staff.

The lovely mix of Campo de Encanto Pisco, Mancino Bianco, fresh lime juice, homemade pandan syrup and fresh thyme was great! It’s great for those who are not fond of strong alcoholic drinks as this one tends to be a bit sweet.
Aloha (PHP400) is a bit stronger compared to Pisco Perucho and it comes in an adorable ceramic tiki. The combination of Samba blended rum, Jose Cuervo traditional, homemade Falernum, fresh lemon juice, pineapple juice, agave nectar and fresh mint could be a bit strong at first but it gets a lot better after some time, when the ice dilutes the alcohol.
I wasn’t too crazy with R’s Hakuna Matata (PHP400) and Frankenstein(PHP400) as both were quite strong.

Hakuna Matata has Don Papa Rum and Mango Paradise liqueur while Frankenstein has Plantation 3 stars rum, Myer’s dark rum and Bacardi 151 overproof rum. Though both drinks had fruit juices, it wasn’t enough to dilute the strong taste of rum.

And to cap the night, we feasted on some heavenly sweets.

One of the must order desserts is Picarones (PHP300) or homemade Peruvianpumpkin donuts with raw sugarcane syrup and citrus sorbet.
I couldn’t really comment on the sorbet as I wasn’t able to try it but the deep fried donuts with pumpkin chunks were divine especially when drizzled with syrup!
The Merengado de Guanabana (PHP300) which required us to “drop” the white chocolate bowl with ice cream was interesting too. I loved the soft guyabano bits and the slight tartiness of the ice cream and blueberries which was beautifully balanced by the thin sheet of white chocolate.
The Peruvianhomemade ice creams (PHP140/scoop) were all great too. We tried QuesoHelado (Milk Cinnamon), Lucuma(Andean Chesa) and Choclo (Corn).
Among the three flavors, I liked Lucuma best as it somehow cleansed the palate with its tangy taste.
Overall, it was a fun night. I had a fantastic time indulging in great food and drinks while spending time with some of my favorite foodies. I will definitely visit again for some drinks and a few light snacks or maybe for some steak as well.
Samba is located at 8th Floor, Shangri-La at the Fort, 5th Avenue, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.

First Bite: Papa Diddi's

I still vaguely remember the first time I visited Papa Diddi’s (which I have yet to blog). And just when I thought that Papa Diddi’s is all about cold treats, I came across its Sapphire Bloc branch and found out that this daddy can whip up savory dishes as well.

Hello, Papa Diddi’s!
Unlike its cramped Maginhawa branch, Papa Diddi’s Ortigas branch is a lot more spacious and had more interesting interiors. Just look at that book chandelier!
I passed by the area at bit past 9 p.m., coming from an event hosted by Real Living magazine, hungry and craving for something warm and filling.
After a few minutes of flipping the menu pages, I decided to go with Champorado and Bagnet (PHP199) because I’m a sucker for breakfast dishes.
While waiting, I kept thinking of which pants to destroy to recreate the denim placemats of Papa Diddi’s. And I was not yet done with choosing which pants to murder when my food arrived. I was impressed as it didn’t take them more than 10 minutes to serve my order.
My champorado and bagnet were served on a wooden paddle that seemed to be meant as pot holder. On the side were milk and sour salt.

I sampled the champorado first without any milk and it was already good. It was chocolatey and the grains were not overly soft or mushy. I then poured some milk after and it didn’t really do much difference to the taste.
The bagnet on the other hand was crunchy and salty, creating a nice contrast against the sweet champorado. I sprinkled it with some sour salt giving the crunchy pork a stronger (and tangier) taste!

I can’t wait to try Papa Diddi’s other dishes!

P.S. Papa Diddi’s air conditioning units are pretty powerful. Make sure you have a cardigan or shawl handy when you drop by.

Papa Diddi’s is located at North Tower, The Sapphire Bloc Building, Sapphire Road corner Onyx and Garnet Streets, Ortigas, Pasig City.
